CA To Switch Off Unregistered SIM Cards By April

Kenyans have been reminded by the Communications Authority of Kenya that if their SIM cards are not registered by the end of April, they would lose their phone lines and any services that rely on them.

After an influx of unregistered SIM cards sold in the country by unlicensed operators and agents, California’s telecom compliance, licensing, and standards director, Julius Lenaseiyan, says the government is cracking down on these illegal sim cards.

“A person who intends to register a SIM-card shall provide verifiable registration particulars which include a national ID for citizens and passports for refugees and other outsiders,” Lenaseiyan stated.

According to Communications Authority records, the majority of unregistered cards were detected among the elderly who bought their phones before the ban went into effect in 2015, when the restriction was ineffective.

“The SIM card regulations 2015 now require mobile carriers, such as Safaricom, Airtel, and Telkom, to re-register their users by updating their information and uploading a digital passport-size photo of the consumer.

The new limits are also intended to reduce the use of counterfeit SIM cards and keep subscriber information databases current.

“Hawkers and Agents who break the rules will be arrested as well,” a CA official stated.

During the registration procedure, telecommunications firms have been instructed to thoroughly verify identifying documents provided by customers with the Integrated Population Registration System (IPRS).
